BRINGING DOGS TO SWEDEN

This guide is for anyone who wishes to travel into Sweden from another country with dogs, cats, or ferrets. Simply answer five questions, and the guide will lead you to the rules and regulations that apply to your trip.

All who participate at Östersund 2025 and/or import dogs to Sweden from other countries should be aware about up to date import regulations. It is the participants own responsibility to get informed about these rules.

In basic the following rules apply for traveling to Sweden from EU countries.

  • The dog must be ID-marked with a chip.
  • The dog must be vaccinated against rabies, After the primary vaccination, you must wait 21 days before travelling with the animal.
  • The dog must have anEU passportfor pets. The EU passport must be issued by a veterinarian.
  • Important: When you want to bring your dogs into Sweden, you must always give Swedish Customs notification of the animal.

If the animal is not reported to customs, it may be denied entry into Sweden!

So donot followthe green lane‘Nothing to declare’ if your dogsare not reportedvia the internet to Swedish customs.

If you are travelling from another EU country and have an animal with a European pet passport with you, you can give Swedish Customs notification of your dogs via the internet.

When you arrive in Sweden, you can choose the green lane (“Nothing to declare”) in the surveillance area.

If a customs officer asks, you must be able to present your notification number and the animal’s European pet passport.

You do not have to “denotify” (i.e. “notify the return of”) your dogs

  • When you travel with a group of more than 5 dogs who are to participate in an exhibition or competition, or are to be trained before such an event.

Normally you can not travel with more than 5 dogs if you are NOT participating in an exhibition or competition. Then other rules apply for importing dogs.

Fill in the Östersund 2025 /vet booklet Chip list for all of your dogs and print it out.

Also print out your confirmation/registration email and a copy of your registration fee payment as proof that you participate in Amundsen Race.


From 1 May 2013. Entry to Norway with 5 or more dogs requires a healthcertificate which is provided by veterinarians approved by the Norwegian Food Department (Mattilsynet). The certificate is valid for 4 months. Before departure to Norway the dogs are to be checked by a veterinarian within 24 hours and the veterinarian has to document the execution of the Control in the dog’s Passport.

The veterinarians on Östersund 2025  offer this service for free, directly after the race. Please inform race officials at the regestration if you need a Health certificate after the race.
